Why Fantasy?

December 24, 2007 at 1:40 am (Musings) (, , , )

Shamelessly nicked from loads of people. Richard Bartle asked the denizens of Terra Nova why fantasy games are disproportionately represented amongst MMOs.

Holidays

December 23, 2007 at 1:19 am (Navel gazing) (, )

I’m currently on holiday which is why there have been no updates recently. I’ll try and post something in the next few days but I’m at my in-laws so it’s not always possible for me to be anti-social and slip off to the computer room.

Fear not, this doesn’t mark a return to the dark days of updates every month or so.

PvP MMO Design

December 10, 2007 at 7:49 pm (Links) (, )

Brian ‘Psychochild’ Green has an interesting discussion going on at his place based on a post by Scott ‘Lum’ Jennings about PvP games and how to design them. I’ve put my tuppence into the ring which I may expand on here later. In the meantime go, read and comment.

Too Much Beta Spoiled the Game

December 8, 2007 at 10:48 pm (Musings) (, , )

Gamasutra has an interesting article about some comments made by Richard Garriott at the recent Independant Game Conference in Austin. He gave a speech about making MMOs and afterwards was asked what, in his opinion, went wrong with his latest game Tabula Rasa. I think it’s fair to say that TR has undersold its potential by a long chalk. I haven’t played it myself so I’m not going to comment on whether it’s any good or not, however for a title like this with a name like Lord British behind it, most people (including NCSoft) would have expected it to make more of a splash than it did.

Rather bizarrely Richard Garriott believes that at least part of the reason for the underwhelming reception is due to beta burnout.

Bloginati

December 3, 2007 at 11:56 am (Info) (, )

Thanks very much to Ryan Shwayder for adding me to the Bloginati webfeed.

For those of you interested in how games are put together, bookmark it. People who actually put games together for a living like Raph Koster, Scott Jennings, Richard Bartle, Steve Danuser, Ryan Shwayder and many other industry flag bearers pour out pearls of wisdom and nuggets of insider commentary there.

Scooby Doo Moments

December 1, 2007 at 11:57 pm (Info)

I’ve decided not to keep the anonymity thing going. I figure that most of the people who read this blog know or strongly suspect who I am anyhow so I’ve done a bit of tidying and editing to reflect that.

For those who didn’t know or those who were looking for my blog, this is the personal blog of Iain Compton – aka IainC, aka Requiel – the former DAoC Europe GM and now the English Community Manager for WAR in Europe.

Please note that this is not an unofficial communications channel for Goa or EA Mythic. I’m not here to sort out issues or answer specific questions about WAR. That’s what I do on community sites and our official website with the sanction of my managers. This is just a place where I like to talk about MMO design, concepts, news and whatever else happens to interest me at the time.
